Harry Kane says he will always be confident when shooting at goal, in the face of criticism over his performance in the 2-1 Champions League defeat against Monaco.

The Spurs hitman was only able to test Danijel Subasic on one occasion throughout the 90 minutes on Wednesday, hitting a tame strike at the goalkeeper from a late chance to equalise.

Despite having three other shots blocked, Kane claims the result did nothing to dent his self-belief ahead of a return to Premier League action.

“As a striker you have to be confident,” Kane told reporters after the game.

“I’ll never lose my confidence in front of goal. I’ll be doing it on Sunday [against Sunderland], shooting and making the keeper work.

“People said the same this time last year and I went on to win the Golden Boot and scored 30 goals for club and country. People are going to talk but it doesn’t bother me. I’m fit, I’m ready to go and I’ll be ready on Sunday.

With games against CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen still to come in the group stage, the North Londoners will need to bounce back quickly in order to avoid an early exit in their third Champions League appearance.

“When you’re 2-0 down in the Champions League it’s difficult, but I thought we were the better team,” said Kane.

“We’re more than capable of winning the rest of our games. There’s no team in the group we’ll fear. We’re more than capable of winning all of them.”
