Football Federation Australia has announced it has not renewed the contract of former Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar after a review of the under-23 side’s failed Rio Olympics qualifying campaign.

Australia did not reach the Olympic stage once more having failed to qualify for London 2012, scoring a solitary 2-0 win over Vietnam alongside underwhelming results against UAE (1-0) and Jordan (0-0).

Those results appear to have cost the former Adelaide United boss his job, who has been a part of the FFA’s coaching structure for five years.

No coach has been immediately named as Vidmar’s successor in the position.

Despite recent poor results, FFA CEO David Gallop thanked Vidmar for his contributions to both the Socceroos and Olyroos.

“As a former Socceroo champion and professional in Europe and Asia, Aurelio brought a wealth of experience to the coaching roles he performed,” Gallop said.

“Viddie was a committed member of the coaching staff and made a key contribution to the development of many young players.

“His role with the Socceroos’ campaigns for 2014 World Cup and 2015 Asian Cup was highly regarded. I wish him well on the next stage of his journey in football.”
