Melbourne Victory stalwart Leigh Broxham says the pain of last season’s dramatic finals exit still lingers among players.

Brisbane Roar stunned Kevin Muscat’s side in the opening game of last season’s finals series, overturning a late Besart Berisha goal to advance in a 2-1 win.

Goals from Matt McKay and Thomas Broich secured progression in the incredible turnaround.

With the clubs due to resume hostilities in Friday night’s A-League season opener, Broxham admitted his team mates will draw motivation from that defeat.

“It took a little while to get over the end of last year,” Broxham said.

“Obviously we had to move on quickly because we still had games, but when everything is done and dusted, it still hurt a lot.

“Not that you need any more motivation, but it’s there.

“Going there and getting a good result will really set us up for the start of the season.”

The match kicks off at 7:50pm AEDT.
