Maarten Stekelenburg – 5: Got very little help from his defenders and was not individually at fault for any of the goals but nor did he do come up with anything to really hep his side. Seemingly lacked composure in this game.
Matt Targett – 5: Lasted only 45 minutes due to injury and did nothing too memorable in his time on the park.
Virgil van Dijk – 6: Forced to bail out his fellow defenders on a number occasions and looked the best of the back four yet ultimately was unable to stem the flow of United’s attack.
José Fonte – 5: A poor performance from the Saints’ skipper who seemed to be regaining his form in recent weeks. Very shaky.
Maya Yoshida – 4: A disastrous performance by the Japanese man filling in at right-back. Gifted Martial a goal with a woeful back pass and did little to redeem himself.
Victor Wanyama – 6: Able to break up a few attacks but perhaps not as influential going forward as was needed. Would’ve snatched a last gasp equaliser if not for De Gea’s heroics.
Oriol Romeu – 5.5: Put in a lot of work and looked dominant early on but his mark on the game waned as the match matured.
Dusan Tadić – 5.5: Another who started so brightly for the Saints but faded as the match wore on.
James Ward-Prowse – 6: Whipped in a few terrific crosses early and looked dangerous at times.
Sadio Mané – 5.5: Came back into the lineup against the team he tried to sign him over the break but didn’t really have much influence on the game aside from an effort on goal that ended with Pellè’s opener.
Graziano Pellè – 7.5: A brace for the Italian kept the game interesting and looked very much a threat to the United goal for the duration.
Substitutes
Cuco Martina – 5: Seemed uncomfortable on the left flank and failed to contain Mata. Substituted on for Targett at half time.
Steven Davis – 6: A little more successful in harrying United’s midfielders and attackers when they had the ball. Substituted on for Romeu in the 56th minute.
Shane Long – 6: Worked hard but came too late to make much of a difference. Substituted on for Ward-Prowse in the 76th minute.
