Wellington Phoenix have released striker Blake Powell from his contract and the player has returned to Sydney for personal reasons.

The club did not disclose any specific information regarding his exit.

Head coach Ernie Merrick expressed his admiration for Powell and accepts his decision to leave the club.

“Blake is a terrific person and has been a popular member of the playing squad,” he said.

“For the moment he joined the club he showed a willingness to learn and he finished up as our top scorer.

“I wish Blake well, will keep in touch with him and follow his progress with interest.”

Merrick also reserved due praise for the 25-year-old’s incredible display against the Wanderers last season.

“Our fans will never forget his four-goal burst in the 5-2 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium,” he said.

“That was very special and showed his potential.”

Powell was thankful for the opportunity in Wellington and appreciative of the club supporting his decision to return home to Sydney.

“I would like to make a special thank you to Ernie Merrick for giving me a second chance in the A-League and for his on-going coaching and support,” he said.

“Thanks to the supporters of the Phoenix for making me feel welcome in my first season, it was pleasure getting to know some of you.”

The centre-forward returns to Sydney after 23 games for the Phoenix and eight goals.
