When you are struggling, the one game you simply cannot roll over in is a local derby.

But in the 226th Merseyside Derby, that is exact what happened as Everton were thrashed 4-0 by bitter rivals and near neighbours Liverpool. It is the Blues’ second 4-0 derby defeat in just over two years and marks a 12th straight derby without victory.

The poor defeat has further piled the pressure on besieged manager Roberto Martinez, whose tenure on the blue half of Merseyside now appears to rest on Everton’s FA Cup fate. Defeat against Manchester United at Wembley on the weekend could well spell the end of his reign.

Ramiro Funes Mori’s red card for a shocking tackle on Divock Origi, leaving the Belgian on a stretcher, certainly did not help the Toffees’ cause, but they simply floundered on the pitch as Liverpool landed blow after blow, ending the match with more than 30 efforts on goal.
