Outside90’s Jarrod McAleese discusses the big issues to emerge from the opening round of the 2015-16 A-League season.

Brisbane bury off-season drama in blistering first-half

John Aloisi’s last managerial stint ended after he was sacked following a 17 game winless streak. Brisbane, who have been engulfed by administrative trouble, put aside their difficulties in the most effective manner – by producing on the field. A brace from freshly signed frontman Jamie Maclaren either side of a Daniel Bowles header were the fruits of an expansive first-half from the embattled club, who led 3-1 at the break. Though less adventurous in the latter stages, the early defensive frailties were ironed out, ensuring three points for the Queenslanders. Aloisi will be delighted with the away performance, which for now has taken the spotlight off the Roar’s off-field plight.

Commanding custodian Covic may be missed as Redmayne struggles

Journeyman goalkeeper Ante Covic earned hero status at the Wanderers after an outstanding 2014 AFC Champions League, keeping eight clean sheets in 12 matches including holding out Al-Hilal for 180 minutes in the two-legged final as the Wanderers became Australia’s first ever Asian champions, also being named tournament MVP in the process. Covic was released at the end of last season and his replacement on opening day, former Melbourne City keeper Andrew Redmayne, did little to inspire confidence, after being lobbed for the opener and not dealing with two corners which led to goals. With only the unproven Dean Bouzanis in reserve, the Wanderers will be sweating on an improved performance from the much maligned Redmayne and are perhaps already ruing the decision to let Covic go.
