United fans speak with their feet in opposing Adelaide Oval

In a decision that evoked fury among Adelaide United supporters and confusion among the broader A-League fanbase, the Reds were forced to play their season opener away from the traditional home at Coopers Stadium. Just 19,079 watched the largely uneventful 0-0 draw against the champions Melbourne Victory live at the Adelaide Oval, with the stadium debacle the main talking point coming from the match. Charman Greg Griffin claims the club were powerless to stop the fixture being played at the Oval, with the ground management and the FFA agreeing to schedule the match away from Coopers Stadium. Reds fans chanted “we should have gone to Hindmarsh” in reference to their usual home patch and the club must be cautious in handling the dilemma, as fans will evidently not tolerate a repeat performance.

Broxham sending-off lamented by Kevin Muscat

Referee Peter Green was condemned by fiery Victory manager Kevin Muscat and football pundits alike for his harsh decision to send-off utility Leigh Broxham for what he deemed a second bookable offence. While Broxham could have no complaints for his first booking, a reckless challenge on United forward Cirio, the second yellow card he received after tussling with Isais was much more controversial. Replays show that Broxham was unlucky to be dismissed, with Green’s argument that the stand-in skipper raised his forearm appearing unfounded. Broxham was shown to have all eyes for the ball and the Victory will be aggrieved at losing the dependable stalwart to suspension.
