Manchester City came from a goal down to secure a very important three points against Watford overnight.

A couple of spectacular strikes from Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero replied to an Aleksandar Kolarov own goal that opened the scoring for the Hornets. The Sky Blues left it until late though, with both of the goals coming in the final 10 minutes. The home side let a lot of chances go begging and Quique Flores will be surely ruing the fact that his team did not come away with anything to show for.

Leicester City’s draw against Bournemouth also means that Manuel Pellegrini’s side moved within one point of the Foxes, while they remain three points astray of league leaders Arsenal, who also grabbed all three points on the night.

City end disappointing away run

Pellegrini’s team ended what was a terrible away record with this result. The last time the Citizens won on the road in the league this season was way back in September of last year against Crystal Palace. Still, it took two special efforts from the in-form Toure and top-scorer Aguero to get past Heurelho Gomes in the Watford goal. City’s struggles away from home this season have been much blamed upon the number of injuries that they have suffered, especially to key players like Vincent Kompany and Aguero.

Pellegrini will be hopeful that his team can grab a few more points while travelling in their upcoming fixtures if they want to keep their title challenge alive. Following back-to-back home games in the league, the Sky Blues then visit West Ham and Sunderland in the next consecutive weeks.

Watford struggling against the big teams

Contrary to Leicester’s form against the Premier League big boys this season, Watford have not been able to get the results. The last four games that the Hornets have lost have been against five of the teams in the top six. Defeats at the hands of Manchester United, Tottenham, Leicester City and Manchester City have prevented them from climbing further up on the table. Quique Flores’ side have also failed to win to win any of their last three matches, right after they managed three wins on the trot and now find themselves in ninth position in the league. The Spaniard will hope that his side will be able to get back to winning ways as they face struggling Southampton, Swansea and Newcastle in their next three fixtures.

Busy fixture list affecting Premier League hopefuls

Leicester City might have started the season in blistering form, but the busy December-January period has seen them slip-up and yet to win following Christmas. Another interesting fact is that the Foxes are also yet to score a goal in that period. Watford are also yet to win post-Christmas, with the hectic fixture list finally catching up to these teams. The strength in depth will really start to play a key-role as the injury list tends to increase during this time in the season. There are still three more fixtures left to play-out in January, as teams are looking to start the year on a high note.
