A second-half comeback from the Newcastle Jets was enough to overturn an early Melbourne City lead at AAMI Park in an entertaining 3-2 Friday night contest.

Aaron Mooy got the hosts off to the best possible start after his deflected shot found its way into the back of the net. Then only 10 minutes later Stefan Mauk was on the end of a fabulous team goal to double City’s lead, looking as though they would go on to take the result from there.

But it was the Newcastle Jets who mounted a memorable fight in the second-half. Ben Kantarovski was given a free header from seven-yards and made no mistake. The Jets, who continued to stream forward, were then awarded a penalty in the 74th minute, which Milos Trifunovic stroked home with great aplomb to level the scores.

It was the Serbian again who scored the winner in the 79th minute for the Newcastle, moving them to the top of the League for at least 24 hours.

Game of two-halves

It is one of football’s biggest cliches, but this match really was a story of two-halves.

After a very disappointing opening 45 minutes from the Jets perspective, the visitors were able to regroup at the break and came out as a different prospect in the second-half. Melbourne City, on the other hand, looked as though they were controlling the game when they went two goals up after only 21 minutes, but they then turned on the cruise control and failed to maintain their early dominance, something which ended up costing them the game.
