Roma drew with BATE Borisov 0-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday evening in Group E of the Champions League.

The Giallorossi had to wait until after the final whistle for confirmation that Bayer Leverkusen had failed to beat Barcelona in Germany. The two draws on the final matchday has seen Barcelona easily top the group and with Roma joining them in the knockout stages thanks to a better head to head record against Leverkusen.

Missed Opportunities

Roma could have and should have won this game. They had a host of chances particularly in the second half to win the match, which would have eased the tension evident around the Stadio Olimpico, yet none were taken. Forward Eden Dzeko admitted before the game he was one of the major reasons behind Roma’s poor form of late. However, the big Bosnian forward missed two easy chances straight after half time which would have settled the growing nerves among the Giallorossi players and fans.

But the former Manchester City man was not the only player to blow his chances. Alessandro Florenzi, Miralem Pjanic, Radja Nainggolan and Mohamed Salah, who returned from injury when he came off the bench midway through the second half, all had opportunities to put Roma ahead. It was not just clear-cut chances where Roma were wasteful. On many occasions, from both set-pieces and in open play from wide areas, Roma’s delivery was shocking. The Giallorossi repeatedly failed to get the ball past the first man and as a result wasted several opportunities to test the BATE defence.

Roma’s attack, that looked so deadly at the start of the season, is losing its bite.
