Watford and Southampton played out a drab 0-0 at Vicarage Road, with both sides remaining winless so far this season.

The Hornets came the closest to taking the three points, Odion Ighalo and Etienne Capoue missing very presentable chances, but there was not much goalmouth action.

The draw means that Watford have taken three points from their first three games while the Saints have managed just two.

Watford:

Heurelho Gomes – 7: Made a couple of comfortable saves but will be surprised at the relatively easy ride he’s had in the Premier League so far.

Allan Nyom – 8: Again outstanding in both halves. One first half run nearly opened Southampton up.

Sebastien Prodl – 7: Another impressive showing, the centre-half partnership looks one of the biggest strengths of this Watford team.

Craig Cathcart – 8: If he had a foreign-sounding name, he’d have people talking. Superb.

Jose Holebas – 6: Was quiet in his 45 minutes, also giving away two foul throws. Subbed at half-time.

Etienne Capoue – 7: Another classy performance from the Frenchman, slightly dampened by missing the best chance of the game from two yards out in the second half.

Valon Behrami – 6: Tired as the match wore on, but started in typically pestering style. Will play second fiddle to Capoue most of the time.

Ikechi Anya – 8: Worked ridiculously hard and showed versatility by playing on the right-wing and at left-back for 45 minutes each. His pace is a crucial weapon.

Odion Ighalo – 5: The least impact he’s made on a game this season. His movement wasn’t great and failed to take a very good first-half chance.

Jose Manual Jurado – 6: Another afternoon when the Spaniard was close to being brilliant but it just didn’t come off.

Troy Deeney – 6: Worked tirelessly but will be desperately hoping for that first goal very soon.

Substitutes:

Alessandro Diamanti – 6: A few nice touches but didn’t look quite match fit. Hopefully more to come.

Ben Watson – N/A: Came on late and didn’t really impact.

Southampton:

Maarten Stekelenburg – 6: Very easy afternoon for the Dutchman, with the Hornets failing to hit the target once.

Maya Yoshida – 6: Comfortable in a new-look back three, but was hardly tested too much.

Jose Fonte – 7: An impressive piece of defending against Deeney in the second half, when he nicked the ball on the byline and won a throw, stood out.

Steven Caulker – 7: Dominant in the air, and looks a perfect foil for Fonte.

Cedric Soares – 6: Quiet in attack although dealt with the threat of Jurado relatively well.

Matt Targett – 5: Struggled against Anya in the first half and was wasteful in possession.

Vincent Wanyama – 6: Also wasteful with possession and shots, though his controlling presence in midfield was important for his side defensively.

Oriel Romeu – 8: An impressive performance. Romeu was everywhere winning the ball back for his side, and setting them on the attack.

Steven Davis – 6: Very quiet, and eventually subbed. His inclusion seemed to represent a bit of a negative move by Koeman.

Sadio Mane – 5: Made little impact on the game before being subbed inside the first half through injury.

Graziano Pelle – 6: Didn’t look particularly well rested after Thursday night’s excursions in the Europa League but was an aerial threat in the box.

Substitutes:

Shane Long – 6: Threatened with his pace but was wasteful with his best chance in the first half after cutting in from the left.

James Ward-Prowse – 6: Only on for 20 minutes and made no significant difference to his side.

Jay Rodriguez – N/A: Hard to rate him on a 10 minutes when the game was fizzling out.
