Things go from bad to worse for Jose Mourinho and his championship-winning side.

The Portuguese maestro topped off a dismal week marred by the Eva Carneiro controversy with a crippling defeat at the hands of fellow title contenders Manchester City.

It has been a difficult couple of weeks to start the season for the ‘Special One’. The opening day draw to Swansea City along with a week’s worth of controversy surrounding team doctor Carneiro has not helped his cause.

It seems as though Mourinho does all he can to deflect pressure away from on-field matters. However, two sub-par performances are indicative of a team which is struggling and needs revitalisation before its title defence begins to slip away. The loss to City was compounded by the fact that John Terry was substituted at half time, which Mourinho labelled a ‘tactical move’. What was plain to see was the Chelsea veteran was struggling to deal with the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva causing havoc around him.

Chelsea’s offseason activity has been poor with the signing of Radamel Falcao questionable at best. Add to this, a string of average preseason performances and the warning signs are flashing for Mourinho. His team was dominated in an uncharacteristic way against Manchester City and he needs to act quickly before City and co. begin accumulating points at a frighteningly rapid rate.

Instead of bemoaning the decisions of referees, taunting other managers and berating staff for merely doing their job, perhaps it is time Mourinho puts his head down and begins to work on his team’s deficiencies. The opening fortnight of Premier League action has shown that what Chelsea produced last season will not be good enough to win the title this time around.

Over to you, Jose.
