Van't Schip left fuming over denied penalty for Melbourne City last night

Melbourne City coach John van’t Schip was very critical of the officiating towards his side this season in the wake of his teams 3-2 loss to Newcastle on Friday night.

The Dutchman believed City should have been awarded a penalty when he spotted an infringement on his star man Corey Gameiro in the second-half.

“At 2-1, we should have got a clear penalty on Corey Gameiro again, I say again, because it’s the third one we didn’t get this year, a clear penalty,” van’t Schip said.

Ironically the Jets were awarded a penalty late in the game as referee Jarred Gillet controversially waited for his linesman’s signal before pointing to the spot for handball against Wade Dekker. The penalty was subsequently converted by Milos Trifunovic to equalise.

The Dutchman maintains the belief his side is a victim of dubious refereeing, and did not hold back when he signalled out Gillets decision making as well as a penalty not given in the derby two weeks ago.

“It’s unbelievable that when you’re on top of it and you see it happening that he is grabbing Corey Gameiro around and the ref is just not brave and courageous enough to point to the penalty spot, it’s only clear because linesman said it’s a handball and you can give it,” he said.

“I’ve seen it not given this year, we had another in the derby against Victory with Thomas Deng that was clearer, and we didn’t get it, so it’s not consistent, it’s not consistent in how they are making their decisions, and that’s very frustrating.”
