Tony Popovic: Disallowed goal should have stood

Displeased Western Sydney Wanderers boss Tony Popovic says the disallowed goal netted by Mark Bridge in the second half should have stood and that no explanation has been offered by referee Jarrod Gillet thus far.

The controversial moment transpired at a crucial time in the second half when the Wanderers held the ascendency and were pushing for a winner at 2-2, a result that would have extended their 10-game unbeaten run.

City scored only six minutes later.

“No, I haven’t spoken to him (Gillet). We’ve had no explanation,” Popovic said.

“I don’t think we need one.

“He blew the whistle to play. We played, we scored. That’s it.”

Popovic added that he was none the wiser as to whether the official had offered any explanation to his players.

“For me it’s irrelevant, what he said.

“If he’s blown the whistle to play, well then … we made one mistake. We actually listened to the ref, he blew the whistle, we played and we scored.”

Despite the incident, Popovic believes his side did enough to win the game and lamented missed opportunities.

“We had enough opportunities in the second half, totally dominated away from home.

“Had it been four or 5-2 in the second half … would not have been a surprise.

“At 2-2, when you miss two or three one-on-ones, they’re defining moments.

“If you take the lead there, if you put those away, then maybe we don’t discuss the refereeing decision.”
