Friday night starts the A-League weekend with a must-win meeting between Western Sydney and Brisbane Roar, that could play a crucial part in decided in the Premiership.

How much momentum did Western Sydney pick up last round?

Last weekend’s win over Perth Glory not only saw the Wanderers gain breathing space atop the table, but claim three points over arguably the league’s second biggest threat heading into the finals. However, it is not just the points Tony Popovic will be celebrating. Despite finishing the match on the losing side, Perth were certainly hard done by not to pick up a share of the points, with Western Sydney’s super sub once again saving the day for the Red and Black. Given the nature of the win, and it’s prominence in helping define the finals series, the three points last round will be crucial in giving the Wanderers momentum.

Will Suncorp continue to host goal fests?

Suncorp Stadium will not only play host to a must-win clash between two Premiership contending sides, but potentially a blockbuster goal fest if recent encounters in Queensland are anything to go by. Four of the last five games at Brisbane’s home ground have ended with four or more goals scored, including the Roar’s 4-1 loss to Adelaide and 4-0 win over the Central Coast. While Brisbane themselves have been involved in an incredible seven consecutive matches involving four or more goals. Given Western Sydney and Brisbane both host the talent and motivation to continue the recent trend, fans should be set for a thriller.

This fixture’s impact on the Premiership

With three points separating the sides, and just over a month left of regular season football, Friday night’s opener could be one of the deciding matches in the Premiership race. If Brisbane are to pick up a home win over the Wanderers, then they could finish the weekend joint top or open the door for Adelaide to take outright first, which given United’s round 24 meeting with Western Sydney could set them up to see out the season. While should the Wanderers take three points here there could be no stopping their momentum into finals– particularly given their relatively easy next six games. Where as on the other hand both Adelaide and Brisbane face a more difficult finish, the Roar set to play all except one top six side.
