The 2015-16 season comes to an end this Sunday as Adelaide United look to complete their Cinderella story when they take on another side that simply cannot win a grand final, Western Sydney.

Adelaide Oval

Given the capacity of Coopers Stadium, this season’s grand final will be held at famous cricket pitch Adelaide Oval. While the ground itself is impressive, it was not designed for football, causing some controversy among football purists and Adelaide fans. While the increased capacity certainly will allow more spectators, the distance from the pitch and design of the stands often compromises much of the atmosphere, and in a grand final that is certainly not ideal. Additionally, the Reds’ enviable home record this campaign has been built for the majority at Coopers Stadium, and while they have still won more than 50% of their games played at Adelaide Oval, the idea of moving the players from their arena of success is somewhat questionable given the stakes in the game.

A-League – Grand Final Preview – Adelaide United vs Western Sydney Wanderers

Western Sydney’s epic semi-final comeback

Last weekend, the Wanderers made A-League history with the biggest ever comeback, which saw them down Brisbane Roar 5-4 despite trailing 3-0 at half time. More than just a spectacle for the fans and great viewing for neutrals, the match showcased the mental strength of Tony Popovic’s men. However, while the game was a perfect example of the side’s nerve, resolution, and the importance of a packed Wanderland to Western Sydney, it has given the Wanderers a significant disadvantage heading into the grand final – 30 minutes of extra time. While Popovic prides himself on the fitness of his men, the players will in some way be affected by the additional time on the pitch in an incredibly tough match.

Tarek Elrich

As the Wanderers played out a classic, Adelaide United got the job done easily over Melbourne City. That match not only saw the Reds’ front line on display (particularly Bruce Djite) but the return from injury of Tarek Elrich in defence. Given both the Wanderers and United have bagged 49 goals this campaign and the form of Castelen and Brendon Santalab, Elrich’s presence in the Reds defence (the best in the league), and his spontaneous ventures forward will be a huge boost for Guillermo Amor’s men. Additionally, the Wanderers front line will be further disadvantaged when they face the rejuvenated Reds back four – they come into the match with two less days recovery time, and the additional strain of travel, putting a lot of emphasis on the depth of each side’s squad this Sunday.
