Three Key Talking Points – Adelaide United v Central Coast Mariners

Adelaide will be looking to bounce back from a tough few weeks with a home game against cellar-dwellers Central Coast Mariners.

Adelaide have lost momentum

Adelaide were hit with a massive blow a fortnight ago with key defender Tarek Elrich being ruled out for several weeks with injury – in the wake of his absence Guillermo Amor replaced the Socceroo with Jordan Elsey who struggled to control the City’s Harry Novillo, and therefore forced the team into tactical changes against the Wanderers – with Amor favouring a draw over the chance of a loss. However, the changes to the side have still seen them go two games without a goal, a third match consecutive match will set an unwanted record for the club and see them head into the finals in undesirable fashion.

Can the Mariners capitalise on the Reds’ drop in form?

The Mariners bolstered by the their shock comeback draw against Sydney and the return of key personnel, will certainly be looking to pick up a rare away win and regain their old dominance over Adelaide. While the absence of Mitch Austin and Luis Garcia didn’t stop Central Coast from finding the back of the net they will be welcome inclusions at Coopers Stadium. Although it’s somewhat unlikely the Mariners will return home with points, Adelaide’s two-game drought and the pressure of the Premiers Plate chase could tip the balance in the away team’s favour.

United’s versatility

Last weekend Adelaide failed to hit the scoresheet, but succeeded in stalling Western Sydney’s attack. The Reds set out a defensive gamp plan, with the sole aim of keeping it tight and trying to find an elusive goal on the counter-attack. This weekend’s match will show just how versatile and disciplined they are, as the Reds are likely to change their tactics and showcase attacking power that they harbour.
