Liverpool have reported that Steven Gerrard will pull on the shirt of his beloved club in Sydney on January 7, in a Legends match at ANZ Stadium.

He will be partnered by close friend and ex-teammate Jamie Carragher, while the likes of legendary goalkeeper Ian Rush, John Arne Riise and Didi Hamann are also expected to be included.

Former Reds manager Gerard Houllier, who famously masterminded a treble in 2001, will coach the side.

Speculation was rife just weeks ago, suggesting that Gerrard would return to the Liverpool senior team under Jurgen Klopp, only for both player and manager to rule out the sentimental move.

The match will take place during the MLS off-season and will be the first time since Gerrard has pulled on the red shirt of Liverpool since his farewell game in May.

The 35-year-old was excited by the prospect of being a part of the match.

“It will be great to play with the official Liverpool FC Legends,” he said.

“The squad looks like it’s a great set of lads, it’ll be good to get on the pitch with them. Our fans are the best and to play in front of them again will be emotional, I’m sure.”
