In their fourth season back in England’s top flight, Ronald Koeman’s Saints continue to throw logic out the window and punch well above their weight.

In fact, the South Coast’s premier club is punching so far above they currently find themselves in the lofty heights of sixth place, just a point behind fifth-placed Manchester United and seven behind Manchester City, who currently occupy a Champions League place in fourth.

Despite a shaky opening and middle period of the season, Saints have flown under the radar and taken some big scalps along the way. However, this is no anomaly – since their return to the Premier League, they have made a habit of hovering towards the right end of the table. Perhaps we should not be so surprised anymore, and Southampton should get the credit they deserve as a well run football club.

Without someone like Koeman in charge, an astute tactician, excellent man-manager and adept in his recruitment, Saints would struggle to compete against the clubs with seemingly bottomless pits of money or the lure of having their name in lights at a ‘big club’. While not quite a fairy-tale story of the ilk of Leicester, it is these three attributes which help the club exceed expectations every season.
