Four years ago today, Emile Heskey signed with A-League side Newcastle Jets after 18 years in England.

The former Leicester, Liverpool, Wigan and Aston Villa striker was announced as Newcastle Jets’ marquee signing for the 2012-13 season.

“His effectiveness in being able to hold the ball up and invite other players to play off him is going to be a big benefit to us,” then Jets manager Gary van Egmond said at the time.

“He’s someone who can really lead the line and is exactly what we’ve been missing.”

Heskey debuted for the Jets against Adelaide United, but did not score until the following week against Sydney FC.

Famously, that match saw both Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero find the back of the net as the Jets clinched a 3-2 win at Allianz Stadium.

Heskey remained at the Jets for one more season before Australia’s dose of ‘Heskey Time’ came to an end. His adventure down under would conclude with 10 goals to his name.

The former England international returned to his homeland in 2014, signing with struggling Bolton Wanderers.
