In arguably the most controversial transfer of the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur’s new£30m midfielder Moussa Sissoko has revealed why he chose North London over Merseyside.

When asked to explain the reason why he opted to work under Mauricio Pochettino, he told Spurs’ official website: “It’s simple. They did well last season, they have a great manager, they have a good team.

“I spoke to Hugo Lloris, he told me this club is amazing and everything is here for me… to be good, to play some good games and to fight with the best teams… in England so that’s why I came here.”

Tottenham’s first bid of £16m was quickly rebuffed by Newcastle, and with Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy seemingly failing to get the transfer finalised, Everton swooped to meet Newcastle’s £30m valuation. The bid was accepted, and Sissoko looked destined to end up on Merseyside.

However, it has since been revealed that in Sissoko’s mind, Tottenham was only ever the likely destination.

Once Daniel Levy lodged an improved offer to match that of Everton, Ronald Koeman’s phone calls to the midfielder went unanswered, while a private jet that was organised to transport the player to meet with representatives went unused.
