Momentum is a big thing in football and it seems like the Melbourne Victory have got their mojo back. They have now climbed to fourth and look primed to prepare themselves for an assault on the top two.

Enduring a winless four weeks in December, Victory have woken up after a 4-0 win against the league leaders Brisbane Roar as well as a narrow 1-0 win against Sydney FC.

Victory midfielder Gui Finkler says his side have always been in the right frame of mind, despite losing games before the new year.

“I think we were doing pretty well even when we weren’t winning the games, I think because we won everyone’s saying the attitude has changed,” Finkler said.

“For me personally we wanted to win all games as well, we did last night and the result was coming, so we were proud of the boys.”

It was a Matt Jurman own goal which got Victory over the line last night in a game that won’t live long in the memory.

However, on the balance of play Finkler believed his side was worthy of the three points.

“I think it wasn’t an entertaining game to watch, they defend most of the time which was their game plan,” he said.

“We knew it was going to be like that, we keep pushing to get a goal which was an own goal, but it came down to the team that was trying to win the whole game.”

Kosta Barbarouses was influential and again showed just why he’s such a part of Victory’s progress with blistering runs and carving out chances for his teammates.

Finkler spoke of his admiration for the speedster and the Brazilian maintains the opinion of him being the fastest player in the league.

“He’s a smart player, quick as well so he has this combo so it’s easy to play on his side,” he said.

“When I turn forward I see his runs and I tried to play the ball for him because I know he can beat anyone in this league with his speed so it’s good to have him in the squad.”

Victory have a short time to recover as they take on Perth Glory this Saturday, leaving the side with just three days rest and a long flight to Western Australia.

Despite the challenges they face, especially a Glory outfit fresh from their biggest ever A-League winning margin after a 6-1 demolition job of Newcastle Jets, the Victory appear to be full of confidence again as they set their sights on top spot.

“The last three games we got seven points, we’re still three points behind Western Sydney,” he said.

“I think we can push through and get to the top.”
