After three relatively dour games on Saturday night, Sunday got off to a great start with a tense game which France emerged 2-1 victors over Ireland.

Robbie Brady gave Ireland an early lead thanks to Robbie Brady’s early penalty and held out to halftime.

A second half double to Antoine Griezmann turned the game in France’s favour and they closed out the game from there.

Germany re-established themselves as Euro 2016 favourites with a 3-0 win against Slovakia in Lille.

The reigning world champions made a perfect start, taking the lead through Jerome Boateng’s spectacular volley after just eight minutes.

Joachim Low’s side should have doubled their advantage just minutes later after winning a penalty for a foul on Mario Gomez, but Mesut Ozil saw his tame effort saved by Matus Kozacik.

A second goal would eventually come for the Germans just before the half-time break, thanks to a blistering run by Julian Draxler.

The Wolfsburg man drove past his defender and to the goal-line, producing an inch-perfect delivery to Mario Gomez at the near post for the finish.

Belgium have set up a quarter final date with Wales after defeating Hungary 4-0 in Toulouse, with goals to Toby Alderweireld, Michy Batshuayi, the scintillating Eden Hazard and Yannick Carrasco.

The diminutive attacker wore down the Hungary defence and his hard work paid off in the final 15 minutes, laying on a brilliant assist for substitute striker Batshuayi before his solo goal settled it two minutes later.

Hungary’s spirit was commendable throughout, but the Eastern Europeans could not find an answer despite responding well after the break with attacking openings of their own.

For Belgium, it was a case of job done and onto the quarters, where Marc Wilmots’ outfit will be tasked with downing an in-form Wales.
