The match

The home side made an early impact, scoring the first goal of the match inside three minutes through Cristiano Ronaldo who turned the defender before rolling the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Hull’s dream run early in the season soon continued when Daniel Cousin equalised with a glancing header from an Andy Dawson free kick.

United regained the lead soon after through Michael Carrick, who found the back of the net from just outside the box.

The hosts looked in cruise control heading into the interval as Ronaldo scored his and United’s third from Nani’s corner, delivered to the near post.

It appeared as if it was only going to get worse for the visitors when captain Nemanja Vidic found the back of the net to give United a three-goal cushion.

Hull’s never-say-die attitude was still well and truly alive as the Tigers worked their way back into the game when plenty of sides would roll over at the Theatre of Dreams.

The visitors got their second through substitute Bernard Mendy, who delightfully chipped an onrushing Edwin Van der Saar.

Frenchman Mendy’s impact on the game was not yet finished when he was awarded a penalty after being bought down by Rio Ferdinand in the box.

Former Manchester City player Geovanni then stepped up to convert, making for a nervy final eight minutes.

The Red Devils would hold on to move up into third position on the table.

The fallout

The result meant Hull lost their first game away from home for the new season and from there, it became a struggle.

The Tigers would only manage to collect a further 15 points before the end of the season, finishing one point above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile for United they would go onto claim another Premier League crown, finishing four points ahead of rivals Liverpool.
