Relegation candidates Rayo Vallecano welcomed Champions League chasing Villarreal to the Estadio de Vallecas and sent them home with a 2-1 defeat.

Goals from Javi Guerra and Miku cancelled out Adrian’s strike for Villarreal as Rayo controlled the match against Marcelino’s team, who rang in the changes from their midweek Europa League match.

It was to be the home side who would open the scoring in the seventh minute through Guerra. The forward would receive the ball from Miku and then play it back to his strike partner, whose shot was parried by Alphonse Areola straight into his path for the early lead.

The goal seemed to awaken the visitors as they began to mount pressure. That would be telling in the 20th minute as an exquisite chipped through ball by Jonathon Dos Santos picked out Adrian, who slotted past Juan Carlos in the Rayo goal.

The second-half was a tight affair filled with fouls and yellow cards, as both sides pushed hard against the other.

It took until the 81st minute for the deadlock to be broken and it was Miku for Vallecano getting on the end of a cross to put the crowd into raptures.

Rayo survived some late pressure from the Yellow Submarine, but always looked the better side as they secured an important three points in their quest to stay in La Liga.
