Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat says he will not be settling for sixth position on the table despite the fact Victory are two games behind teams sitting in the top four.

Even though Victory are struggling to pick up points, with just one win in eight A-League matches, the boss wants to battle it out until the very end

“I think that’s the easy way out if I’m being honest, I’m not being harsh, it’s not the way I look at things,” Muscat said.

“At this point in time we’re searching for a performance. We need more than one result to achieve anything this season.

“If mathematically, we can finish third or fourth, why don’t we strive for that? If that means playing under duress, isn’t that what we’re here for?”

Victory could only salvage a point in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle Jets on Sunday afternoon with all the pressure was on them.

The Jets played the majority of the game with 10 players on the park yet managed to contain their opposition.

Muscat believes his team was adequate but lacked the final ball to test Mark Birighitti. He still maintains faith his team can have an impact in the finals.

“The first time they go up the other end we concede, someone runs with the ball a long distance, a poor goal to concede,” he said.

“In the second half, the endeavour was there, we just didn’t have the quality at that right moment. We certainly had enough opportunities to put ourselves in a spot where we created a chance.

“I look forward from here, we still have so much to play for, we can still have a big say on what we achieve this season, we’ll get back and analyse that.

“I’m certainly up for the fight and the challenge, I’m optimistic on what we can achieve on the remainder of this season. It’s important we find people with the same mindset.”
