Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi says he is proud of his squad despite squandering a real chance to snare the A-League Premiers Plate’ in a goalless draw against Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

Adelaide United now have an unassailable top spot position and have claimed the plate after the point shared between the two at AAMI Park.

The Roar were hot favourites going into the game against Victory, needing a win, their opponents were coming from a midweek game from the Asian Champions League as well as missing key striker Besart Berisha through suspension.

Aloisi’s men looked to be the more likely to open the scoring through the majority of the game, but could not break down the Victory defence.

“I thought we did more than enough to win, we created a lot of opportunities,” Aloisi said.

“The areas we got into, we found Lawrence Thomas was in top form again, in saying that we created a lot of chances to win the game. It wasn’t meant to be.”

Aloisi also conceded the players were deflated after wasting the golden opportunity, however, he was looking forward having a home final.

The Roar boss was also gracious and said the Reds deserved the accolade, however had praise for his own players after pushing to the end.

“I have to congratulate Adelaide United in winning the premiers plate. We now regroup and get ready for the finals,” he said.

“Of course everyone’s disappointed, the players had the opportunity to win the premiers plate. We were in a good position to win it tonight, I can’t fault the players at all.

“From the word go they went at Victory right to the end, to the 93rd minute we still had the opportunity to win the game.

“We know their structures. We were able to deal with that and them sitting off trying to catch us on the break, they didn’t really create any chances, I don’t remember Jamie Young making any saves.”

New signing Tommy Oar made his first start in all competitions since October for Ipswich Town, the small winger looked deadly and almost scored after 25 minutes hitting the side netting.

Aloisi said his agility was only a positive heading to the finals.

“He’ll be better from tonight as well, he’s been looking sharp at training. He’s starting to look fit his work rate was very good tonight,” he said.

“Considering he hasn’t started in six months I thought he did well.”
