The Newcastle Jets overcame their Cake Tin curse to record a surprise 2-1 win over Wellington in a seesawing contest on Sunday.
David Carney returned from exile to give the Jets a surprise lead with a header after the Wellington defence went to sleep half an hour into the match.
Things looked safe for Newcastle heading into the sheds, only for Roly Bonevacia to classily slide home an equaliser seconds before the half time whistle.
A minute into the second half and things only looked to be getting worse. Appeals for a penalty minutes after the restart were heeded as Blake Powell went down in the box. However, a poorly struck penalty by Roy Krishna was kept out by Jets gloveman Mark Birighitti.
That proved to be a crucial moment in the scheme of the night. Newcastle new-man Milos Trifunovic met a delightful cross from Carney with 20 minutes left to put the visitors back in front, with skipper Nigel Boogaard given his marching orders soon after.
