Adelaide United have defeated Wellington Phoenix 3-0 in contentious affair at Hindmarsh Stadium on Boxing Day.

The Reds took the lead after a Manny Muscat own goal and never looked back. However, the game changed when Albert Riera was shown a second yellow card, which polarised opinions on Twitter.

Overwhelmingly, the general view seemed to be that referee Chris Beath got the integral call wrong.

Nevertheless, United took full advantage of their one-man advantage, adding another two goals. A Craig Goodwin strike found its way past Glen Moss after the goalkeeper misjudged the effort and Michael Marrone added the icing on the cake. The ball struck both posts before the right-back found himself in the right place at the right time to tap into an empty net.

Here’s the best of what the internet had to offer.
