Manchester United made hard work of it against Northampton Town, defeating the League One side 3-1 in the third round of the League Cup.
Michael Carrick opened the scoring on 18 minutes with a phenomenal strike from outside the box, lashing in a deflected Wayne Rooney free kick into the top left-hand corner.
Northampton’s resilience paid off three minutes before half-time when Alexander Revell they levelled from the penalty spot.
Ander Herrera restored the visitors’ advantage with a neat finish, before Marcus Rashford capitalised on comical mis-timed clearance to stroll into an empty net and scored the easiest goal of his fleeting career.
Here are are some of the best reactions from Twitter:
If Herrera/Carrick/Pogba don’t start as #MUFC‘s midfield trio on Saturday, I’ll storm out of Old Trafford….then calm down and walk back in

The ones saying Rooney should be dropped are out of their minds… He should actually be banished from starting again for #MUFC

Great to see Carrick back dictating the pace of a game. How that fat silly scouse wanker didn’t get subbed is beyond me. It’s a joke. #MUFC

Smalling is dominating the defence. Him and Baily will be majestic in the future. #mufc

Honestly not sure if Rooney is very off form, has a lack of confidence, past it at the top level or has lost his hunger and motivation. #MUFC

I honestly think the harder Rooney’s tried tonight, the worse he’s got 😦 That really show how far he’s fallen 😩 #MUFC #EFLCup

Carrick makes such a difference. Not many out there that can dictate tempo like him. Think Blind could be our best long term option👍🏽 #MUFC
