Newcastle United recorded their first win of the season with a 6-2 win over Norwich City at St James’ park on Sunday, with Georginio Wijnaldum stealing the show.

Bottom of the table and winless, the Magpies were desperate to the lift the pressure off manager Steve McClaren.

Wijnaldum got the home side off to a great start with two first-half goals, slotting it past John Ruddy to establish a 1-0 advantage and then heading the Magpies back into the lead following Norwich City’s equaliser.

Wijnaldum was a nuisance all afternoon for the Norwich City defence, continuously making late runs into the box and getting in between the opposition defenders.

In the second half, the Dutchman put the result beyond doubt as he completed his hat-trick with another header and capped off his incredible display with a fourth, Newcastle’s sixth, to round off the impressive victory.

Newcastle had only managed six goals in 720 minutes of Premier League football this campaign. Incredibly, they equalled their season tally in just 90 minutes, with Wijnaldum scoring four of them.

A fortnight ago, Wijnaldum and Newcastle were on the receiving end of a spectacular display from Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who put five goals past Newcastle in their 6-1 demolition. Perhaps this was playing on the mind of the Dutchman on Sunday as he produced his own master class.

He might not have matched Aguero’s feat of five goals, but in the end it was his four-star display that was the difference in his side’s 6-2 win.

The 24-year-old was signed from PSV for a fee of £14.5 million and is the most expensive singing made under the tenure of current owner, Mike Ashley.

With six goals and an assist to his name, the Dutchman is proving to be one of the few positives in a poor season so far for the Magpies.

So for guiding Newcastle to their first win of the season, and slightly easing the pressure on manager Steve McClaren, Georginio Wijnaldum is this week’s EPL Hero of the Week.
