Marc Overmars – 2000 (£25 million)
Like Petit, Overmars was a key component in the Gunners’ double-winning season, but ended up departing the club in a landmark deal, making him the most expensive footballer in Dutch history.
The electrifying winger never hit the heights of his superb 1997-98 season in North London, enduring an underwhelming career for the Blaugrana, unable to hit double figures in any of his four seasons for Barca and most notably failing to win any silverware in that four-year span as the club went through one of its most tumultuous eras in its long history.
In 2004, Overmars’ career came to an abrupt end when he announced his retirement from the game due to a troublesome knee injury.
