Tale of two penalties

This match could have played out very differently if early incidents had been dealt with alternatively. Very early on in the match Hume City opened the Victory defence up, with former Victory man Theo Markelis bursting down the left flank, whipping in a cross. The cross never made it past Jason Geria, the ball being blocked by his hand. Referee Ben Williams didn’t see the incident and a seemingly obvious penalty was not given.

At the other end of the spectrum, Victory’s first goal tonight came from the penalty spot, the referee noticing Bradley Walker’s foul on Besart Berisha and pointing to the spot. The Albanian striker scored, as he has in every round of the FFA Cup so far this year, and the Victory took the lead into half time.

If Hume had been given the penalty and scored it, the amount of confidence that Hume would receive would have been astronomical. The complexity and tempo of the match would have changed entirely.
