Adelaide United defender Michael Marrone talks exclusively with Outside90’s Gianluca Filosi about the Reds’ underwhelming start to the season and their slim chances of reaching the top six.

The Reds have endured a horrendous start to the 2015-16 A-League campaign, winless in their first eight matches, before a 1-0 victory against Perth last Sunday saw the club rise to eighth on the ladder.

However, Marrone insists it is difficult to explain the reason behind United’s poor season, but admitted conceding first in matches was not ideal and adapting to a new coach in Guillermo Amor took time.

“We conceded early in a lot of games and we found it hard to get back into the game and I guess adjusting to a new coach and a few other things didn’t help,” Marrone said.

“He [Amor] just wanted to change a few things in the way that we attack and defend… it’s a lot less structured there’s a lot more player freedom.”

The 28-year-old, who arrived at Coopers Stadium in February 2014, also reiterated Amor’s sentiments about the campaign to ‘fill the stands’ against Sydney FC on Friday, stating the support from the fans is crucial in helping motivate the players.

“To get more numbers behind us and get the feeling up when we do something good, get behind the boys is really good for the players,” Marrone continued.

“Hopefully we can get a big turnout.”
