Kevin de Bruyne’s value to this City team.
When David Silva injured himself in the warm up, a ripple of panic went around the City-supporting world. Without their Spanish playmaker, Manuel Pellegrini’s team are stripped of a vital barb. Sergio Aguero appears blunter without Silva. Toure rampages less. So Silva’s injury was unfortunate in the extreme. Jesus Navas was called upon to replace him, but really Silva’s absence allowed for Kevin de Bruyne, all £54 million of him, to play in the middle of the park. The Belgian was excellent, scoring a super goal from range, and appearing all over the pitch. He looks a fine addition, with a Silva-esque penchant for drifting between the lines. Had Manchester City found an equaliser, it would no doubt have been his doing. His price tag made up the largest portion of that record-breaking starting XI amount; he’s worth every penny.
