Comical Sunderland defending returns

Just when things seemed to be looking bright for Sunderland again and the belief after a derby day defeat had them ready for a fight against Everton, the amatuerish defending that has haunted the team this season came into full effect.

A promising start to the game quickly turned sour as the Toffees clinically scored four goals after the break, turning an end-to-end 2-2 draw early in the second-half into a smashing 6-2 victory.

Sunderland have scored just 13 goals since the start of the campaign, conversely conceding 25 in the process, posting the worst defensive record in the league so far.

Allardyce had suggested in the build-up to the game that he may throw a few surprises Everton’s way in terms of his team and the shape he would play, which was apparent from the opening whistle.

The manager favoured a back-three at Goodison, consisting of Billy Jones, Wes Brown and Sebastian Coates – but his strategy quickly back fired.

Although in attack Sunderland seemed more fluent and the chances were being created a lot more than om previous fixtures this season, the defence was back to its worst, particularly in the second-half.

Letting Everton put six into the back of the net has definitely sent the manager back to the drawing board.
