Perth Glory’s Diego Castro has beaten the likes of Aaron Mooy and Jamie Maclaren to win this season’s Johnny Warren Medal.

The Spaniard starred in Perth’s revival in 2016, finishing the campaign with 13 goals which helped Kenny Lowe’s men to the elimination finals. Castro pipped Melbourne City midfielder Mooy by one point (34-33), but was unavailable to attend the event, with Lowe accepting the award on his behalf.

Adelaide boss Gui Amor won the Coach of the Year award, while Melbourne City’s Bruno Fornaroli won the Golden Boot with a record 25 goals. Fornaroli spoke highly of the A-League and called his free-kick against Perth Glory in the elimination final his favourite goal out his 25. However, the Uruguayan was coy about whether he will be returning to the A-League next season.

“I do not know, football is a sport that changes much so I’m not sure but I’m really happy playing with Melbourne City at the moment”.

Melbourne City dominated the awards night particularly in the W-League, with forward Larissa Crummer winning Golden Boot and NAB Young Player of the Year award. Kim Little won Player’s Players and goalkeepers Thomas Sorensen and Caitlyn Savage won both A-League and W-League Goalkeeper of the Season.
