French midfielder N’Golo Kante has revealed that Jose Mourinho tried to lure him to Manchester United before a deal with Chelsea was finalised.

The former Leicester City defensive midfielder spoke in glowing terms about Mourinho, and also that he expected contact from the controversial 53-year-old manager after winning the Premier League title.

“It was amazing to have Mourinho call me, even though I’d been warned before how he would appeal to me,” Kante told reporters.

“I listened to his arguments about why I should move to United.”

Despite contact from the former FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss, Kante had already enjoyed a positive conversation with Antonio Conte about a move to the English capital.

“At that time I was hesitant between staying at Leicester or leaving for Chelsea,” the midfielder said.

“My discussions with them (Chelsea) were already well underway. But when I spoke, I had a good feeling with Conte.”

Chelsea currently sit between the two Manchester clubs on the Premier League table in second, with goal difference separating the trio. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City top the table with maximum points and a goal difference of +6, compared to that of Chelsea and Manchester United with +5.
