Central Coast Mariners have announced midfielder Nick Fitzgerald has mutually agreed to part ways with the club and will depart with immediate effect.

The 23-year-old was dropped from the Mariners’ squad that defeated Wellington Phoenix on New Year’s Eve and was not recalled for their enthralling 3-3 draw against Melbourne Victory in Geelong on Friday night.

Fitzgerald is the latest in an increasingly long line of players to depart the Gosford club that includes veterans Liam Reddy and Eddy Bosnar.

Manager Tony Walmsley said it was within the interests of all parties to end their relationship.

“He has chosen to end his time here and after much consideration we feel it’s in everyone’s best interest to part company,” Walmsley said.

“I have fond memories of working with Nick over a number of years and we are disappointed Fitzy won’t be extending his time with the Mariners.

“Fitzy is a great lad and whoever signs him is getting a hard working, versatile player.”

Upon departing, Fitzgerald reflected on winning the A-League championship with the Mariners in 2013 and thanked fans for their support.

“I would like to thank the Mariners for the opportunity they have given me and most of all the amazing fans who have supported the club and myself from day one,” Fitzgerald said.

“I have really enjoyed my time playing at the Mariners and experienced some great memories that includes winning the Championship in 2013.

“I also want to wish the boys all the best for the rest of the season.”

Fitzgerald is a product of Central Coast’s youth setup, debuting for the senior team in 2010 before making the move to Brisbane under Ange Postecoglou in 2011. He would return to the Mariners two seasons later, going on to score seven goals in 70 appearances.
