Sydney FC have signed promising 23-year-old Australian midfielder Joshua Brillante on a three year deal from Fiorentina.

In late June, it was reported by Fairfax journalist Dominic Bossi that the former Newcastle Jets starlet had agreed personal terms with the club in late June, pending a release from parent club, Fiorentina, which has since occurred.

Brillante failed to make a mark in Italy’s top division, and was subsequently loaned out to earn game time firstly with Empoli, and then Como.

During his time in Newcastle, Brillante established himself as one of the most versatile young players in the country, earning the mantle of Player of the Year in 2014 and was called up to Ange Postecoglou’s provisional 30-man Socceroos squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to club media, Brillante was delighted at having secured his future in Australia: “I’m delighted to be joining such an iconic club in Sydney FC,” he said.

“The lure of working under Graham Arnold was a huge draw card and like Sydney FC I’m always striving for silverware which I believe we can achieve this season.

“I’ve got my eyes set on regular first team football and I’m eager to get underway.”

Sydney FC play their first competitive match of the season on August 10th, in the FFA Cup away to Wollongong Wolves.
