Manchester United have signed Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho on a three-year contract, after sacking former manager Louis van Gaal on Monday morning.

The move comes after months of speculation over the managerial position at the club. Now Mourinho, who reportedly made it clear to the United hierachy long ago that he wanted as much time as possible to plan for the season ahead, has just under three months to do so until the beginning of the 2016-17 campaign.
Mourinho’s representatives met with United’s club chiefs this morning to discuss terms of his deal which will tie the divisive manager to the club until at least 2020.

The Portuguese has won 21 major honours during his time with FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, including eight league titles in his 16-year managerial career to date.
After three disappointing seasons for the 20-time domestic champions, Mourinho’s appointment is designed to revitalise Manchester United out of a long period of transition following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
After reports emerged of van Gaal’s sacking, United released a statement in which the Dutchman said: “Having managed in Holland, Spain and Germany, I had always hoped for the opportunity to manage in English football and be part of English culture. Both of these experiences have lived up to expectations and been fantastic.”
“I thank my players and wish them well for next season. It has been a pleasure to work with them and it has been particularly rewarding to see so many young players take their chance to break into the first team and excel. I look forward to watching the continued development of these young players next season.”
