Melbourne Victory icon Archie Thompson is set to return to the club, but he won’t be banging in goals in front of the North Terrace.

Instead, Thompson has been announced as an official club ambassador.

A two-time Victory medallist and the club’s games and goals record holder, Thompson will undertake a role supporting the club, predominantly in the community and in other significant off-field endeavours.

“Archie Thompson is an icon of Melbourne Victory, the Hyundai A-League and football in Australia,” said Victory CEO Ian Robson.”

“Archie’s on-field achievements speak for themselves, but his impact off the pitch has been just as profound. He has been committed to engaging with the community, particularly with young kids, whether they are fans on match day, are associated with local clubs or are families where children are experiencing difficult times. ”

“Archie will continue to be the face of Melbourne Victory as an official ambassador across a range of club programs.”

Thompson’s Hyundai A-League career with Victory, which spanned 11 seasons, came to an end in May.

“It’s an honour for me to continue to give back to the Victory community, after the incredible support I received over my playing career,” Thompson said.

“While I always gave everything I had on the pitch, I also prided myself on being able to make a real contribution to the fans, especially young kids.”

“To be able to continue that work in an official role at Victory is a great opportunity, which I’m extremely excited about.”

Thompson will be a special guest at the club’s annual Open Day on Sunday, October 2, where he will take part in a formal handover of the No.10 jersey to James Troisi.
