Spanish striker Alvaro Morata says he is grateful that Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini will not play when the two countries meet next month.

The Azzurri defender, who was a force when the sides last battled in France, received a red card in the recent World Cup qualifying win over Israel.

When asked how it would impact their upcoming match, Morata jokingly claimed he would be less likely to suffer an injury with Chiellini on the sidelines.

“I can honestly say my ankles are thankful for the decision to send him off,” Morata said in an interview with AS.

“I had a moment of great joy when I saw that he’d been sent-off, he knows I love him very much and he helped me a lot at Juve and gave me a lot of advice.”

Spain began their road to Russia 2018 with an 8-0 home demolition of Liechtenstein over the weekend.

La Furia Roja will have the chance to avenge their 2-0 round of 16 defeat to Italy at Euro 2016 on the 6th of October.
