Adelaide United has confirmed the departure of midfielder James Jeggo to Austrian outfit SK Sturm Graz for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old moved to the Reds from fierce rivals Melbourne Victory in search of more playing time before the start of the 2014-15 season with his decision paying dividends.

Jeggo was a key player in Adelaide’s inaugural FFA Cup triumph and was also rewarded for his solid performances, winning the NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award, capping off a breakout year for the Austrian-born Australian.

Before leaving the club, Jeggo took time out to thank the Reds fraternity for giving him the opportunity to develop as a footballer.

“I really want to thank everyone at the club, from my teammates and coaches to everyone behind the scenes, for a great past 18 months,” Jeggo said.

“I loved my time in Adelaide and the opportunity that I now have wouldn’t have been possible without the opportunity that United gave me.

“The Reds gave me regular, first-team football and have helped take my game to the next level. For that I’ll always be grateful.”

Sturm Graz, who are currently fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga and vying for a UEFA Europa League position, had reportedly submitted an offer for Jeggo’s services last June, which was immediately snubbed by United’s hierarchy.

Adelaide boss Guillermo Amor praised the midfielder’s commitment and hard work and admitted he has a “big future ahead of him”.

“Jimmy is a good player and a very hard worker, but what is most important is that he is a very good person away from football,” Amor said.

“He is someone that always pushes himself and he has a big future ahead of him in football.

Newly acquired midfielder Stefan Mauk is now expected to succeed the ex-Melbourne man for the remainder of the campaign.

Jeggo accumulated 50 appearances, scoring four goals in all competitions for the Reds and will embark on his new journey with the three-time Austrian champions, subject to a successful medical.
