A-League champions Adelaide United have added to their squad ahead of the new season with the signing of Sergi Guardiola on loan from Spanish side Granada.

The striker, who has no relation to Manchester City manager Pep, has not featured for his parent club in the early stages of this campaign.

His pending arrival, with a medical still to be completed, sees the Reds fill their final visa position in the squad ahead of the 2016-17 season.

Guardiola shot to fame when he was released from a contract with Barcelona’s B team just a matter of hours after signing a one-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

The forward saw his deal terminated after it was discovered he had Tweeted a number of anti-Catalan statements back in 2013.

25-year-old Guardiola’s best performance at club level was for Spanish third division side Eldense, where he scored 14 goals in 41 games.

He may not be the only arrival ahead of the new season though, according to reports from the Advertiser.

United’s General Manager of Football Ante Kovacevic confirmed the club are pursuing a deal for Socceroo James Holland.

“We are interested in James Holland, he’s still in Europe and he is working out what he wants to do,’’ Kovacevic told the Adelaide-based publication.
