2014/15 A-League Finals preview – Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar may only be in the finals due to Perth’s salary cap breaches, but Frans Thijssen’s will out to prove they are not just in the final six to make up the numbers as they take on Adelaide United in the first elimination final on Friday

Form

Brisbane have done well this season juggling with a new coach and Asian Champions League commitments, entering the finals with three wins in their past five games, including an away win against Adelaide in Round 25. Infighting and four consecutive losses meant the defending champions started from behind this season, but still managed 10 wins over the campaign and finished just one point behind Melbourne City.

Despite a first round loss to United, they recovered to defeat the Reds twice this season (both of those coming at Coopers Stadium).

Key Player – Matt McKay

Matt McKay led his side to a tremendous comeback in the 2011 grand final as Brisbane came from two goals down to equalise with three minutes remaining and then go on to win. His passing game and work ethic makes him one of the best midfielders going around. An inspirational leader, when he plays well so do Brisbane, so there is no doubt the Roar will be looking to McKay to get them into the Preliminary Final this time around, which will be the fifth consecutive season they have been in the final four.

Prediction

Brisbane are undefeated at Coopers Stadium since February 2010, but have struggled at times this season and meet an Adelaide side that are always dangerous and looking for finals glory. Friday night’s game also takes place at Adelaide Oval, where they have never set foot before, and although a spot in the finals has been somewhat of an unexpected reward to a hit-and-miss campaign, it is likely that the Roar will struggle to make it past the elimination final.
