7 – How to lose a title in 19 matchdays

Mega-rich. Mega-talented. Mega-followed.

All of the above are apt descriptions of Chelsea Football Club.

Yet as the 2015-16 campaign continues, the Blues continue to suffer from a simply incredible title hangover that no one would have dared to predict ahead of the Premier League’s commencement.

That triumph was emphatic. Chelsea ended the season on 87 points, eight ahead of runners-up Manchester City with only three losses to their name. Tight at the back, clinical through midfield and lethal up front.

The new season has been a total contrast. Chelsea are three points above the drop zone in 14th with nine losses to their name already. An abundance of last season’s best performers, including Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Branislav Ivanovic among others have been well below par, with each of those players dropped at some stage.

The lowest ebb for the Blues was a 1-0 home loss to AFC Bournemouth, a result thought unthinkable prior to the season’s commencement.

A week later and Jose Mourinho was gone. Chelsea and the ‘Special One’ parted company soon after the Blues’ defeat at high-flying Leicester City with Guus Hiddink taking over on an interim basis.
