Harry Kewell might want to avoid the highlights for the next decade or two

One player who might want to avoid seeing Bresciano’s goal for a while is Harry Kewell. Getting on the end of a Viduka touch, his miskick of a bobbling ball fortunately fell to Bresciano to put into the roof of the net to prevent it being one of those bloopers that is a part of highlight shows for years to come. It is one of the few times that you could criticise Kewell for his performance on the night, as he was generally superb after his early introduction.

This side belongs on the big stage

Recoba said before the game that Uruguay had a “divine right” to be at the World Cup. What he did not mention was the fact that this Socceroos team is perhaps the best that this country has put out in recent memory, perhaps ever. They showed tonight that they belonged on the biggest stage and can match it with any opposition. Nobody knows what awaits them in Germany with the draw still a few weeks away, but with Hiddink having a bit more time to work his magic with this side, they can shock anybody in their path.

Nobody will mistake them for one of the classic Brazil sides, but they will certainly make their nation proud in seven months time. This is a team that is easy to get behind and will have the entire country behind it.
