Luciano Vietto slowly proving to be a wonderful purchase by Simeone

The Argentinean had a great debut last season scoring 18 goals in 46 appearances with Villarreal and he was billed as a promising talent when purchased by Atléti. With a big summer move for Jackson Martínez from FC Porto arriving after the news of Vietto’s signing was confirmed, questions were raised on how the young striker would favor in the starting XI with Antione Griezmann, Torres and Ángel Correa also all eyeing for the two striking positions.

After a promising preseason, Vietto had some below-par performances and was unfortunate to need an operation just as he began to find his feet, only days before scoring the crucial equalising goal against local rivals Real Madrid. Now back from a successful recovery, the 22-year-old has been able to see game time following an injury to Martínez and poor form by Torres. Vietto is starting to look to be a striker that can deliver now, rather than the future.

Giménez and Savić the future center back partnership

While Godín is still one of, if not the best centre-back in the world today, Simeone’s move for former Fiorentina defender Savić has been a massive coup for the La Liga side. Already containing one of the finest and promising young centre-backs in the game in Giménez, Simeone now has two young and potentially future world class defenders among his side.

While both have been rotating with one another, each has excelled admirably when called upon alongside the experienced Godín. With age eventually going to catch up with their veteran, Los Rojiblancos fans will not have to be concerned too highly, as in both Giménez and Savić, Atléti have their next Godín-Miranda partnership.

Good draw on Monday could see Atléti go far in the Champions League

Coming first in the initial stage was always going to be difficult when in a group consisting of the Portuguese and Turkish champions, however, Atléti were able to bounce back and leap over Benfica to capture the crucial top spot in Group C.

With both Barcelona and Real Madrid not able to be drawn against Atléti, tough encounters with German sides Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg finishing first, Los Rojiblancos, if they can avoid Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain, have the chance to draw a significantly less threatening team. Cup football always draws surprises and even the best teams have tumbled to the lesser favourites, however, there is always a chance and this chance could see Atléti go far.
